What Is Mastitis and Why Does It Happen?

Mastitis is more than just a sore spot on your breast—it's a condition that spans a spectrum of issues from mild ductal thickening to more advanced infections. At its earliest stages, mastitis may simply involve tender, thickened ducts that restrict milk flow. If left untreated, this can escalate into inflammatory mastitis, which includes redness, swelling, and even fever. If improperly treated—especially with antibiotics when no bacteria are present—this can worsen into bacterial mastitis, phlegmon, or even an abscess.

Many women are prescribed antibiotics by default. But what if there’s a safer, more effective first line of treatment?

Backed by Research

At Maximum Potential Physiotherapy, we believe effective care starts with evidence. That’s why our mastitis treatments are guided by the latest clinical research, not guesswork.

A 2024 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Cureus explored the use of therapeutic ultrasound as a non-invasive treatment for mastitis, particularly in its inflammatory stages. The study concluded that ultrasound was highly effective in reducing pain, swelling, and ductal obstruction, without the risks associated with unnecessary antibiotic use.

“Therapeutic ultrasound is a viable solution in the treatment of non-bacterial mastitis, providing symptom relief within days and reducing the risk of progression to more severe infection.”
— Roxo D et al., Cureus, 2024
PMCID: PMC11416807

This research supports what we see in the clinic every day: women experience significant symptom relief after just 1–3 sessions, often avoiding medications altogether. When used in conjunction with physician-approved anti-inflammatory strategies, such as cool compresses or lecithin supplements, ultrasound can help resolve symptoms quickly and comfortably.

Conditions We Treat

Therapeutic ultrasound is a gentle and highly targeted treatment for a variety of mastitis-related conditions, including:

Inflammatory Mastitis

Characterized by redness, swelling, and fever—but not caused by bacteria—this form of mastitis responds well to non-invasive ultrasound, reducing the need for antibiotics.

Bacterial Mastitis (Adjunct Therapy)

While antibiotics are still necessary for bacterial infections, ultrasound can be used alongside medical treatment to reduce tissue tension and improve comfort.

Phlegmon and Abscess Prevention

By reducing inflammation early, ultrasound therapy may help prevent the progression to more serious infections that could require drainage or antibiotics.

Breast Edema and Localized Swelling

If you’re experiencing puffiness or tender, inflamed tissue, ultrasound can help move fluid buildup and ease discomfort.

Recurring or Chronic Mastitis Episodes

For women who experience repeat bouts of mastitis, therapeutic ultrasound offers a supportive, drug-free way to manage inflammation and keep ducts healthy.

What to Expect During Treatment

Initial Assessment

Your first visit includes a thorough assessment of your symptoms, breast health history, and any previous mastitis episodes. We'll confirm whether therapeutic ultrasound is the right fit for your recovery.

Education and Support

We’ll explain what’s causing your symptoms and how to manage or prevent recurrence. We work closely with you—and your healthcare team—to ensure a full-circle approach.

Each session may make you feel gentle warmth or vibration as the ultrasound targets the affected tissue. Most patients find it soothing and experience relief within 1–3 visits.

Ongoing Monitoring

We check your progress at every visit and adjust the treatment as needed. Our goal is to relieve symptoms quickly while supporting long-term recovery.

At-Home Guidance

You'll leave with self-care tips, feeding adjustments, and home strategies—like cool compresses or recommended supplements—to help you stay comfortable between sessions.
